Kiambu County Development Needs
Our Seven Thematic Areas
Having created a 2040 vision for the development of Kiambu county, a discussion followed about how to realize this vision.
The main problems hindering the vision were identified and classified as cause or effect, and based on this, problem trees were developed.
The following seven core problems were identified for Kiambu county:
Area 1 - Alcohol drugs and substance abuse
KPT is keen and committed to create awareness of alcohol, drugs and substance use and abuse among the communities. As an intervention, KPT is looking at community organisations working in this thematic area, to build their capacity in setting up programs that ensure children and youth are confident and able to make informed choices and decisions as well as get nurtured in a functional system in society.
Area 2 - Poor Indigenous knowledge transfer and lack of patriotism
As a thematic area that is keen on knowledge transfer, KPT is committed to enhance capacity of member organisations on matters values, ethics, morals, patriotism and emotional intelligence which targets youth, parents, teachers and opinion shapers. There is also need to engage communities on matters intergenerational dialogue.
Area 3 - Unemployment
KPT is committed to establishing a favorable business environment that attracts and retains investments and one that provides easy access to credit at affordable rates. This will be achieved through leveraging on CSR opportunities by private sector. In addition to this, KPT is keen on establishing hubs for shared professional resources to support small businesses as well as young innovators.
Area 4 - Low Levels and Inadequate Relevant Skills
KPT is seeking to promote a creative economy through linking citizens to technical and vocational educational institutions where they can hone their skills in readiness for the market. This would in turn produce citizens who have relevant and marketable skills that match what market gaps.
Area 5 - Low Agricultural Productivity
KPT is keen to look at interventions that look at ways to diversify agriculture and agribusiness areas, consistent and beneficial use of county extension officers and adoption of state of the are farming methods and technologies. The goal of this is to enhance food and nutrition security for the county through increased productivity and strengthened agribusiness, leading to increased agriculture-based household incomes.
Area 6 - Poor Citizenry Engagement
KPT is keen to see a citizen-infused development and well-informed leaders who understand and appreciate the roles of citizens in decision making processes and structures. Civic education and public participation are at the heart of this as it empowers citizens on their rights and responsibilities as well as equipping then on how to engage in matters decision making.
Area 7 - Poor Leadership and Governance
The vision of KPT is to see increased collaboration between citizens and government and this will lead to more accountability, transparency and integrity in matters governance. In addition to this, it will ensure duty bearers are keen to be more responsive to the needs of the citizens and communities in the long term.
Our Theory of Change
- IF local organizations can be structured and organized to have agency and voice
- IF local organizations have technical and institutional capacity to design and implement locally driven, sustainable programs,
- and
- IF there is an enabling environment for local organizations to thrive,

- THEN these organizations will empower communities to influence development priorities, and demand better county government performance and improved services delivered
- AND fundamentally improve the social, economic, and governance outcomes.
